As a site which is called Health Improve, we should have a good handle on the definition of health. Turns out health is not so easy to define. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as

“the state of being free from illness or injury : he was restored to health | [as adj. ] a health risk.”

However, for most people, simply being free from illness, while certainly good, is not really enough. Many people focused on fitness have expectations for meeting athletic or aesthetic goals that that are beyond simply staying away from illness.

At a biological level, health can be interpreted as the proper working of biological processes. That is a person who provides the right amount of nutrients and water in order to allow for the full cellular activity.

In another way health can be seen as a set of trade-offs. For instance, elite athletes may seem very healthy, however, while they attain high physical capacities in the form of strength, flexibility of speed, their activities also put a high load on their joints and connective tissues. Many times in health short term health outcomes can be optimized at the expense of long term health outcomes.

Health can be also viewed as an impermanent quality. Eventually, everyone’s health falls to zero as we all are mortal. Health can be defined as the length of time held in a healthful state (i.e. lifespan) and the level of health attained during the the healthful state (i.e. the quality of life or healthiness of the individual)

Our Focus

No publications can focus on every aspect of health in equal measures. Therefore, we think it instructive to note our focus or bias and put it out there. This blog will be focused on long term health management. It differentiates from many health publications in the following ways:

It is not short term oriented (i.e. making immediate improvements)
It is not aesthetically oriented (i.e. focused on getting “great abs”)
It is not medically oriented (that is focused on repair instead of prevention). Yes, its true, while it has made efforts in some areas, medicine is still very focused on repair over prevention. There is more money in repair than prevention.

Our bias is on long term health management, and this is the perspective the articles and posts will be written from.
